An Insider's Guide To The Kona Coast of Hawaii
81
E Komo Mai - Welcome!
With its stark, black lava flows, shimmering blue ocean, and stunning sunsets, the Kona Coast is a vacation mecca on the leeward side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Unfortunately, too many of our visitors spend all their time in the resort areas and never get to experience all the charm that the Kona Coast has to offer. Come with me as I give you all the inside information I've been giving friends for years.
Hulihe'e Palace
Don't Pay For Parking!
Ali'i Drive
Ali'i Drive is Kona's version of a mini Waikiki Beach with much more charm. The beautiful ocean beckons on one side while the quaint little village shops call out their bargains on the other, With its historic Mokuaikaua Church, the oldest Christian church in Hawaii, and its subdued Hulihe'e Palace, Ali'i Drive is a great way to get to know a little about Kona, However, before you even venture to Ali'i Drive, you must bear in mind one fact - the vast majority of people who work in booths that advertise activities have been in Kona about five minutes longer than you have. Most likely they've come here on vacation and decided to stay. They receive a commission on what they can sell to you, so they are certainly not objective. Instead of taking their advice, just approach someone who looks like they live here (the vast majority of people in Kona are very friendly) and ask them about their favorite activity, beach, restaurant, or store. Visitors approach me all the time (I must look non-threatening) and ask me for advice, which I am more than happy to give. Try asking one of the police officers who patrol on bikes up and down Ali'i Drive where they eat their lunch - chances are it's not one of the two-for-one bargain coupon meals that are advertised in tourist publications.
The photo on the above right is taken at the intersection of Hualalai Road and Ali'i Drive, within walking distance of everything. The parking lot on the right requires you to pay a fee upfront and it is filled with rental cars. The parking lot on the left is free and it is filled with the cars of people who live here. The free lot is more than twice the size of the fee lot, and it contains a Farmer's Market that is open on Wednesdays and weekends. You can park here and walk to almost any store or restaurant - we do!
Holualoa Village
Buying Kona Coffee
If you enjoy freshly roasted coffee, Kona is the place for you. The only way to taste the true flavor of Kona coffee is to buy 100% whole-bean Kona coffee fresh from the farms that actually grow it along Mamalahoa Highway in the heart of the "coffee belt'. If you buy 10% Kona coffee that has been mixed with 90% inferior beans and then ground, you might as well just drink generic coffee from the grocery store - the taste will be the same. The coffee-growing village of Holualoa is only three miles up the mountain from Kona, and it has several purveyors of fresh Kona coffee, as well as a wealth of artist galleries with reasonably priced prints to bring home as souvenirs.
Kona Coast
Restaurants
Here is the unvarnished truth - the Big Island does not have a lot of great restaurants compared to those on Maui or Oahu. But, there are some hidden gems that will rival anything found on the other islands. The great restaurants don't usually advertise in the visitor publications - they don't need to. Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae (and also in Hilo) was voted the best Big Island restaurant by Honolulu magazine, and their kids' menu was voted one of the best in America.. I dream of their Blue Caesar salad, with its tender little baby romaine lettuce dressed with anchovy butter croutons, and sprinkling of gorgonzola. Pair that salad with a delicious Coltibuono Chianti, and blue cheese lovers will be in Heaven. They have everything from gourmet pizzas to the catch of the day,all with the freshest ingredients possible. I usually avoid eating in tourist areas because the prices are outrageous and the food is often just mediocre. However, Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar in the Waikoloa Beach resort area is the exception. Sansei has the freshest sushi possible, along with steaks for those who are less adventurous. The wait staff is phenomenal, anticipating your every need without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. Try the Rainbow Roll, an inside-out California roll with slices of salmon and ahi tuna. They even have an icy-cold lychee martini made with lychee vodka - who needs a mai tai? Island Lava Java is the first restaurant that comes to mind when visitors want relaxed oceanfront dining with delicious food. Located on Ali'i Drive, they serve a large variety of coffees, decadent pastries, fresh salads with local greens, and a ever-rotating selection of specials. Their black currant iced tea hits the spot on a hot, Kona day. What goes better with 100% Kona coffee than a delicious pastry, and Coffees 'n Epicurea in Captain Cook has the best of both worlds. Their flourless chocolate silk cake is one of the most sinfully good chocolate pastries I have ever had, and I know my chocolate! I always have a hard time choosing between that and their wonderful lilikoi (passion fruit) cheesecake. Whenever I take friends to visit the volcano, I always stop at Coffees 'n Epicurea to get a selection of desserts for a picnic in the park. They also have a very tasteful gift shop and their own 100% Kona coffee.
Bargains at Costco
Souvenirs
Before you enter a single store to buy souvenirs, beach supplies, coffee, macadamia nuts, or clothing, you must go to Costco. They have most everything you'll need for your vacation at prices that can't be matched anywhere else. You can purchase a boogie board, mask, fins, and snorkel for the price of renting them for two days, use them for your whole vacation, and then donate them to a charity like Salvation Army or Goodwill. You'll save money and help those less fortunate as well. Not a Costco member? You can go to the Customer Service counter and get a one day pass.
Kailua Pier on Ali'i Drive
Lokomaika'i
The word for compassion in Hawaiian is lokomaka'i, which literally means "feeling good inside". I feel good inside when I know I've shared a little bit of my Hawaii with our visitors and helped them enjoy their trip to paradise, with some money left in their pocket. Aloha!

Good to hear these tips from a local. The only problem with Costco is that you need a membership, true? Voting this Up and Interesting.
Kona Coffee!!! Now that's what I'm talking about! The first time I had it, I was seeing stars. Now, as a bona fide coffee drinker, I buy loads of it whenever I visit the Islands. I can never get enough of that coffee. Great tips! Thank you for this Hub, hush! I am bookmarking this for my Hawaiian cruise this fall. Voted up and everything else.
What great tips! I'd really love to go back to Hawaii sometime soon- especially to enjoy the restaurants, hangouts, and shops enjoyed most by the locals. I'm not much one for touristy stuff.
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful Hawaiian tips. I have never been to Hawaii at all! But one of these days I do plan on visiting, like you had mentioned one of the most beautiful places on earth.
You are absolutely right about Kona coffee. I love the flavor and taste of 100% Kona coffee. If you buy the Kona coffee in the grocery store, your only getting a small percentage of the true flavors of 100% Kona coffee. I remember many, many years ago, a co-worker of mine had went to Hawaii for vacation with her husband, and brought back 100% real Kona coffee for me to try. I never had Kona coffee before that. I admit that was one of the best coffee's I have ever tried. I was so thankful to her for giving me a bag of Kona coffee.
I really enjoyed your hub and thumbs up to you! A wonderful hub.
Hush, this is a BEAUTIFUL hub! You accurately depict the Big Island's west side beginning with Ali'i Drive, the pit stop for every tourist who comes to visit. You have done an excellent job here and I can't wait to share it with my followers and link to it from a few of my hubs! Mahalo nui loa and keep up the great work!
What a great hub! Congratulation! I always dream of going to Hawaii. Lovely photos as well. Thanks for sharing.
Your article is so full of great finds. I laughed at the point you made about Costco having the best buys on so many specialty items to take back home! I usually visit Maui and wrote an article about it here but now that I have some wonderful tips I hope to venture to the Big Island soon! Your pictures are fabulous.
wonderful Hawaiian tips.Voting this Up and Interesting.
This is a very informative and well written hub. I can see why it is the Hub of the Day! Congrats! I feel like planning a trip to Hawaii now. Great tips on where to buy and where to park--love the details.
Hub of the Day! You deserve it for this amazing hub! Great work, again, Hush. I have linked to it in every one of my Big Island hubs.
Hawaii is the best place on earth! I've never been to the Big Island, but I've been to Oahu and Kauai - this makes me desperate to make a return trip! The free parking tips are wonderful - along with the sushi restaurant tip. I wish I was looking at those gorgeous turquoise waters instead of the snow outside!
Such a beautiful place. Love your idea on how to end the trip by donating items to charity! Thanks for sharing your photos--the water is incredible.
Congrats on Hub of the Day!
Wow!! This is an awesome load of information and suggestions that I would have never thought about. I really liked the idea of asking the local bike patrol advice on where to eat lunch. When I vacation I like to experience what the locals experience and avoid the touristy places as much as possible. Of course, the touristy places are as much a part of the vacation as well. Thanks for all the advice.
Great information! I've always wanted to visit Hawaii. Hopefully some day. Loved the pictures.
Enjoyed reading this about Kona, we love Kona, go to the Hilton in Waikoloa Village occasionally. Its a great place to stay and enjoy beautiful Hawaii, was fun to learn about a few places that would be fun to go to the next time we are on the island.
What breathtaking panoramas and beautiful pictures! Definitely paradise on earth. It is quite rare to have a glimpse of such magnificent views anywhere else. I didn't have a chance to travel Hawaii but after reading this hub, I'll definitely plan to go soon. Great pics and factual hub...Voted up!!!
Four more months and here we come, Big Island! Will print and bring this with us. Thanks for the awesome hub; so interesting and helpful!
What a well-deserved HOTD award! Congratulations!
This was an excellent read. I've never been to Hawaii, but my parents met there, so I've always had a sentimental pull toward the Islands.
My folks were there during WWII; my dad in the Navy SeaBees, and my mom as a claims office clerk with an insurance company with a military "worker's comp" contract.
Mother took to Island life, going so far as to take Hula lessons, and somewhere, stashed in a box, I still have the grass skirts she brought back. She learned a fair amount about the language (not fluent), but enough that she remembered certain points. So, even having never visited, I understand how to figure out the pronunciation of most words or place names. As a kid, I always got a kick out of rolling off the name of that little fish with a name many times its size: "Humuhumunukunukuapuaa." ;-)
My budget does not include travel to anyplace farther than driving distance (and never has). So armchair travel accounts such as this, I fully enjoy.
Your commentary about 'beware' of tourist-brochure-promoted restaurants I imagine holds true most anywhere. If I were ever able to travel there, I'd be interested in more of a natural history and geology tour than a tourist-spots tour.
Voted up across the board and shared.
For this tour down Sentiment Lane, Mahalo.
There's nothing like getting tips from a local who knows the ins and outs of a region and can also help one save money, time and frustration.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information and the lovely photos and congratulations on earning the Hub of the Day accolade.
What a beautifully written hub about a place I have never been to but hope I will vist one day:) Loved your idea about the Sarongs. The pictures are beautiful and the info so valuable. Congrats on Hub of the Day! Well deserved!
Reading this made me want to hop on a plane today....the last time I was there was many many years ago.
Your description of that salad...o my..I could almost taste it...Hawaii is a gem...and this hub is too!!!
I was there about 10 years ago and wish I could return. So beautiful. I brought Kona coffee back to my friends at the office and ruined some of them for anything else. Thanks for the memories.

Congrats to your Hub of the Day . . . well deserved and well done.
Very useful!
I would love to visit HI again someday. I was there once when I was like two or three because my parents won some type of vacation prize. I don't really remember much of anything from the trip. But, whenever I can get back there, I will try to keep these excellent tidbits in mind! Thank-you so kindly for sharing!

Hiiii Hush... Thanks for your great information...
Hawaii is so beautiful. I've never been, but I have friends that go as often as they possibly can. Would love to taste that special coffee right there on Kona Coast, and it amazed me to see Costco's. The best chocolate I ever put in my mouth was purchased in this wonderful state and it was covering the most yummy coffee bean I ever experienced.
